Or you can use rtrim function to remove line endings:

if($fd = fopen($filename, "a")){
    $message = fgets(STDIN);
    $message = rtrim($message, "\n\r") . ":";
    echo $message;
    //fwrite($fd, $message);
    fclose($fd);
