You don't have to have a diagnosis of ADHD to have some of the symptoms at least some of the time. For such persons and for those who do have ADHD, this workbook is a user-friendly combination of explanation and strategies for dealing with challenges of focus, memory, productivity, and organization.

Tuckman begins by briefly articulating the science underlying the challenges faced by those with an ADD diagnosis, then delves into the specific challenges and possible work-around in all the relevant areas in a very compassionate, accessible fashion.

In addition to chapters on focusing attention, controlling emotions, setting priorities, staying organized, etc., he even put in one for working on these issues as a team with your partner/spouse. Instead of saying what the reader must do, he invites the reader to reflect on past experiences, try new approaches, and then continue reflecting and tweaking. You can completely individualize your approach, choosing which areas to work on first.

Although I do not have ADD, I found his list of tips for managing time incredibly complete since I tend to get into flow and totally lose track of the time. Some examples include build in time to get ready (already had been doing this and it makes a huge difference), add 50% more to all your time estimates (am trying this), put your lights on a timer (need to try!), etc.

This is a perfect book for coaches as well. I shared a section with a dissertation coaching client with the ADD diagnosis, and she was blown away by the spot-on descriptions of the challenges she faces, joking, "How did he get a camera in here and follow me around?" She is now eagerly trying some of the approaches.

I hope this book gets into as many hands as possible as quickly as possible, including those with ADHD, those who live and work with them, and anyone who could use some productivity exercises. I think it will save a lot of hurt feelings, misunderstandings, and failures and recriminations while creating a feeling a mastery and connection.

Thank you, Dr. Tuckman!

I've been waiting impatiently (sic) for this book to be made available on Amazon and it's been well worth it. I've only just bought it but it seems extremely practical and easy to work with. I'm looking forward to mentioning it to the folk at the adults with AD/HD support group that I'm involved with / other relevant people. What an excellent resource to have in the UK when there is so little support and understanding for adults with AD/HD available. As Ari puts it "Executive Functions Explains It All".

When an author gets a really positive review from Barkley (who continues to expand on his excellent insights into the workings of 6 Executive Functions) plus a great Foreword from Hallowell, you know this is really worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book gives one a very good grounding on how the brains information processes are affected by ADHD. The exercises are well structured and would appear to be beneficial based on my first impressions of this book

3.0 out of 5 stars I bought this book because I was interested in an executive functions-specific approach.

But my feeling is that this book has actually been written for non-readers. No offense meant! It's just that there's a lot of ADHD people out there who don't like reading and struggle with longer, more complex texts. If this is the case with you, then the book may actually be a very good choice.

However, as someone who reads a lot and is familiar with ADHD as a topic, I found that the author does not progress quickly enough, and that there are too many repetitions. For basically everything he says (of which everything sounds valid and full of empathy, by the way, so it surely is top notch content-wise), the author asks his readers to jot down examples from their own lives. Accordingly, there are many, many dotted lines in the book, lots of space to fill out.

And this, for me, is where the author's approach gets a bit inconsistent. As I said, I like reading, and also writing, but I cannot imagine myself filling out all these blank spaces - it just gets really boring! So while he seems to address people who do not usually spend too much time around books, he kind of expects you to write half of this book yourself. Which, I agree, may be just the idea of having a work book in the first place, ha ha ha... :D

And yet I find many of the writing prompts redundant (e.g.: List all the approaches and strategies you have used in dealing with xyz so far... ), and I feel overwhelmed by the amount of writing there is to do.
Mabe a more action-oriented work book (one where you write things first and then check them off the list instead of writing about them, or something along the line) would have been more suited for the regular ADHD sufferer.

But as I said, everyone is different; content-wise the author seems extremely well informed, so it may still be a great book for you.
