  • I just got my wife a Mini, but I am more familiar with Android (all of my other iDevices are from previous generations). I am trying to figure out how she can share stuff from within apps to her Gmail account. She has not set up the built-in Mail app since she uses Gmail, but when she wants to share something out of Pinterest using her Gmail, it only gives her the option to share to Mail, and asks her to set up an account. I am sure there must be a way to share directly using Gmail, but I can't figure it out. Can we add Gmail as a "share" recipient somewhere in the iOS settings? Having the iOS Mail client somehow sync with Gmail will be way more complication than she wants. Thanks for any help!

Well, having to set it up that way in the first place. But more, she will have to use two different user interfaces. She likes, and is comfortable with, the gmail app and will not like the idea of having to use an entirely different application for her gmail. On her phone, when she wants to share something, there are a dozen different options, she can share just about anything TO just about anything. I will explain it to her, but it is going to frustrate her that she can't just use the gmail app itself to share.

OK, so what you want is the ability to specify the default mail app to use when sharing. As you've discovered, iOS does not let you change the default mail app to use.

But if she's a GMail user, perhaps you should set up her iOS GMail account anyway since the GMail app really only provides mail support. If she uses a GMail Calendar, or Notes to link to her GMail account, the GMail app won't do that. Also, although she can use GMail contacts from within the GMail app when sending an e-mail, she won't have access to her GMail contacts for any other purposes. In other words:

1- Set up an iOS GMail account. That provides support for Mail, Calendars, and Notes. You can still use the GMail app for mail, but any sharing via GMail would be done through the iOS Mail app.

2- Since the standard iOS account for GMail does not provide Contacts, set up a 2nd account just for her GMail contacts according to this article:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4872?viewlocale=en_US

Sounds complicated, but it's really not and is a one-time set up.

OK, thanks, that sounds like what I will have to do. She is used to sending out using gmail, so having to use any other UI will sort of freak her out (she is not that tech savvy and doesn't like change), but I guess she will get used to it. It is SO much simpler in Android. You go to share from any app and you have a list of apps that you can use (Evernote, Drive, Dropbox, gmail, any SMS program you like, Pocket, Twitter, Flickr, etc, etc, etc). Just pick and go (and they are automatically added to the list when they are installed). I don't understand how iOS doesn't have this feature yet.

For apps that can share items, iOS can do these things. The only thing from your list that it won't share from is the GMail app itself, becasue the default mail sharing is via the built-in iOS Mail app. But for most other items, if you have the type of app that you can open and/or share an item with, it should be available as one of your choices.

I don’t know to which version of iOS you were referring when you wrote that there is not a way to add gmail to the share area, but with 8.2 Gmail app was present in my share area. However, it has disappeared since I have updated to 9.3.1 (and from the list of « other » apps as well). Maybe I miss something, but the only workaround I found was to set up my Gmail account in Mail (as you explained) so that the picture or link, etc. I want to share is sent by Mail from my Gmail account. But since I normally use Gmail as my main email app I’d prefer not to use Mail app. So I guess that since it was possible in 8.2, there may be a way to make Gmail app showing up back in the share area. Any idea about that ? Thanks.

Well, thanks, but I scrolled as far as I could to the bottom and no more Gmail app ! I've been looking in all the possible settings to see if something could prevent that it shows up here and I still don’t understand why it doesn’t. All the other services that sync with my gmail account (notes, calendar, contacts) are working right so far. Any help very appreciated.
