Theater, originating from ancient Greece to the present, has undergone numerous innovations and transformations to adapt to the trends of different eras. Today, theater has embraced contemporary thinking and emerging technologies. It has surpassed the spatial constraints of traditional theater architecture and moved beyond performance methods centered around text. Theater now offers participants a different viewing experience from traditional theater, incorporating various senses to achieve an immersive theatrical experience that satisfies all five senses. While we consider "immersion" a keyword of the modern era, research literature reveals that discussions on theatrical "immersion" have already appeared in studies of traditional theater. This study presents two main questions: (1) What spatial design techniques are used in different theater re-presentation spaces? and (2) What factors in theater re-presentation spaces affect the perception of the audience? To address these questions, the study begins with a review of literature discussing theater development, spatial design, spatial perception, spatial cognition, and immersive theater experiences. It then analyzes two cases: traditional theater and contemporary immersive theater experiences. The study identifies differences in the techniques of creating an "immersive feeling" in different theater re-presentation space scenarios. It further explores the connection between the audience and the space. The study finds that in traditional theater, despite efforts to reduce the distance between the audience and the stage through design, barriers exist due to classical plays, performance spaces, theater hardware, and prescribed constraints. On the other hand, immersive theater completely breaks down the existing relationship between the audience and the stage. Through script guidance and spatial design, participants become characters in the play, subverting the traditional role of "spectator" and merging with the script. The study aims to utilize these findings as design references for future "theater space immersive experiences." The study involves nine participants who each viewed a traditional theater play and participated in a contemporary immersive theater experience. The study seeks to respond to the factors influencing the perception and cognition of participants in both traditional and immersive theater experiences. Using immersion (flow) factor scales and qualitative questionnaires collected before, during, and after the experiences, the study discovered that most participants had a certain degree of familiarity with the "traditional" case in terms of setting and play content. In the "immersive" case, some participants lacked confidence in completing tasks due to a lack of familiarity with the experiential format. In both cases, visual, auditory, and movement factors were considered key elements influencing spatial perception. Additionally, most participants acknowledged that past experiences influenced their perception of the current space, regardless of whether it was a traditional or immersive theater experience. Despite limitations encountered during the study, the concept of "immersion" proves to be vital and widespread in contemporary fields such as architecture, space, theater, and art. Building upon this research, the hope is to explore "space immersion" from more nuanced angles in the future, allowing designers and space occupants to better understand related knowledge.
