Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro confirmed to feature new Samsung ISOCELL camera

XDA Developers has determined that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro both contain upgraded primary camera sensors. Unfortunately, it appears that the pair have missed out on the rumoured ISOCELL GN2. Instead, Google may be using the same 50 MP camera found in last year's Vivo X80 Pro.

XDA Developers has determined that Google has included new primary camera sensors in its latest flagship smartphones. However, the upgrade is not the one that @UniverseIce claimed would be headed to the Pixel 8 Pro. For context, the leaker tweeted in April that the Pixel 8 Pro would feature the ISOCELL GN2, a 50 MP sensor with a 1/1.12-inch optical format and 1.4 μm-wide pixels.

In comparison, Google equips its Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series flagships with the ISOCELL GN1, another 50 MP sensor that has a 1/1.31-inch optical format and 1.2 μm-sized pixels. As always, Google has not confirmed what camera sensors it uses in either device. Surprisingly, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro also have 1/1.31-inch primary cameras, albeit with 21% improved light capture than the ISOCELL GN1.

Thus, Google has not equipped the Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro with the ISOCELL GN2, which Xiaomi uses in the Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra . Instead, the ISOCELL GNV is the only candidate remaining or a customised ISOCELL GN1. For some reason, Samsung has never publicly discussed the ISOCELL GNV, which is already available in the Vivo X80 Pro . Either way, the Pixel 8 Pro appears to be capable of shooting comfortably at 10x zoom , despite only having a 5x telephoto camera.
