Really Good, but misleading

I bought this device for $150 instead of 200 during a (Black Friday?) sale. This is a pretty crucial difference.
I'm going to basically jump into pros and cons, then conclude. I will compare to the Monster ClarityHD Precision Micro Bluetooth Speaker 100 Portable Bluetooth Speaker (MBL CLY SPKR BT) at some points.
Pros:
-Great design, looks fantastic (I like all the colors except red, but I really liked the "grill" on the grey one).
-Very minimalistic, simple, and elegant. Follows an "Apple" product theme. It has only 3 buttons, and the on/off switch.
-Sound Quality is good. This is a small speaker so its never going to be amazing, but I find it rather good for the size. This speaker shines in having good High/Lows, a very rich sound, and really good Bass. In comparison to the Clarity HD which I also tried, the sound is much richer. Though the Clarity HD does indeed have good clarity, the Jambox is as good in that sense as well.
-Very easy to use, pairing is incredible fast and simple (after I got it out of the box it was paired in maybe 15 seconds).
-Has a website where you can download some small features (kind of useless) but also new firmware and technology that is improving the sound of the Jambox such as "Live Audio". Live Audio (i think) separates the Left and Right more and I do indeed think it improves the sound, but it comes at the cost of having a lower Maximum volume. More on volume below.
-10 hour battery life. I never actually checked this and I seriously doubt it's 10 hours, but it's much higher advertised than the other bluetooth speakers, so it's safe to assume that the batterlife even if not 10 hours, is still much longer than other speakers like the Clarity HD.
Cons:
-Loudness. I think the loudness of this speaker is mis-advertised as I was a little bit dissapointed. At home, this thing is great. Easily fills my room, and when I turned it up downstairs, you could still hear it Upstairs in different rooms. If you want the better sound with Live Audio, it is ~2-3 volume levels (Clicks of the button) less, so it is quite a bit. When I took this to a social function with about 15 people all in a room, you could hardly hear some songs when people were talking. This also however depends on the song itself. I think if you were to turn up most songs in Itunes (Volume wise) above 100%, they would still sound good (not distorted). So I hope that the volume cap is put higher in a update (which is why updates are a very nice feature). The Clarity HD gets much louder, but once again the sound is a lot worse. If volume is crucial for you, the Clarity HD might be a nice option (Check out my review on it). Overall I think most people are going to be satisfied with the volume, and if you really need a boost, you can connect the device by wire and the sound gets MUCH louder, as loud if not louder than the Clarity HD on bluetooth.
Edit: Along with LiveAudio, there is also a feature called "Sound Clarity" which once again, says it will improve audio sound at the cost of some volume, when LiveAudio is DISabled. So I had both these features enabled therefore I didn't have maximum sound. So this device CAN get a little bit louder than I thought. I still think the choice between volume and sound quality is a nice one, however to change this you need to connect to a computer, so this cannot be easily shifted on the go.
-Price, $200 is a lot but the market for these devices is quite high as it is. The Clarity HD is twice as cheap on Amazon right now, but as i said before, I got my Jambox for $150 so that made a huge difference in my mind. For $50 more, I would hands down prefer the Jambox over Clarity HD. For $100, the question becomes more clouded. If you have the money and are willing to spend it, you will not feel bad about spending $150 as I think you will be very satisfied with the Jambox, it's just got a pleasing feel to it.
(This isn't really a con, but a concern) -Portability: Im not certain how portable this is. Its really small and easy to carry but you do need some kind of bag, as its awkward to just carry in your hand. You do get a nice case with it. The best option without an extra bag is I guess a decently big jacket pocket would fit it. It is portable but I think its kind of peculiar to carry around, if you have Purse or some kind of backpack or anything, that problem is dissolved.
Conclusion: This is a great product though it is quite pricey. It has really good sound quality and bass for its size and purpose. I am concerned about how loud this could get in a very loud enviornment, but I suspect for most people, it will be good enough. The firmware updates make this kind of problem solvable, and leave the Jambox with room to improve. The design and features are really nice. Compared to the Clarity HD, I think the reviews are misleading. The Clarity HD has notable MUCH worse sound quality, but it does get louder and is cheaper. The firmware updates are a nice touch and give you options for better sound, which is also very nice. In every other aspect such as design and battery life, the Jambox is also supreme.
Extra-Topical: My Jambox is actually going to be RMA'd beacuse it has some kind of glitch or is defective, but a few times, the Bluetooth connection would just be a random sound, like a signal, but it wouldnt play any music and would make weird crackling sounds. The wire would still play music however. Recently I could barely even get bluetooth to play music, rather than these weird sounds as if it were broken, so this is a big problem. I am hoping this is just my unit so its not impacting the review, but if my new one has this problem, I may make an edit.
Also, this isnt really a connectivity drop because it isnt silence, its this weird droning noise. But on the topic of connectivity. Ive never had a drop on my Itouch even while walking downstairs which the Jambox is upstairs. However, my sisters IPhone 4G had like 4 drops in one session of listening. Im not really sure what caused the connection loss and I dont know if its specific to the Iphone 4G but this may be a problem. Never happend to me though.

If you have high quality music saved in your media player, then it will play better on the Jambox (the same with any speaker/headphones).
Now, for the issue of the speaker moving around and potentially falling off a shelf or table: The case included with the Jambox!!! Lay it flat and then place the Jambox on it and watch it stay like an obedient dog!

1 MONTH REVIEW: The Jawbone Jambox is starting to grow on me. The compact size is perfect to toss in a backpack for work, travel, or school. The sound is reasonable and the battery life is excellent (meets the 10hr claim).
*If you plan to exclusively listen at home; moving it from livingroom to bedroom to patio, with the occasional travel, I suggest the BIG Jambox. That thing is not so portable but the sound is AMAZING. The downside is that along with the increased sound and size is the increase in price: $300 (some current sales bring it down to $250)
*If you already have a nice sound system at home but want to have good sound while traveling, then I highly recommend this product. The reasons I do not give this a full 5/5 stars is the useless LiveAudio feature they boast. I have written on my initial review how the sounds to me. All it takes is a firmware update to fix: c'mon Jawbone! I still feel this thing should be $100 so it can compete strongly with other portable bluetooth speakers like the Jabra SOLEMATE Bluetooth Portable Speaker - Retail Packaging - Black and the new Logitech UE 984-000298 Mobile Boombox Bluetooth Speaker and Speakerphone (Black Grill/Black) . The case included is cool, but annoying: it's okay to slide the speaker in, but a pain to remove. If they changed it so that opening is length-wise, then I can just "drop in" the speaker instead of pushing it out like a push-pop.

INITIAL REVIEW: I'm on the fence on the Jawbone Jambox. I bought it when it went on sale for Black Friday/Cyber Monday 2012 for $130. At the asking price of $200, it's just too absurd. At the $140-180 range, it's still too steep. Even at the price I paid, it's still a little expensive. This speaker should be in the $100 range, and here's why:
*Bluetooth technology $25- The range of the Jambox bluetooth is pretty good. Definitely more than my Logitech Bluetooth adapter in my Entertainment Room.
*Speakerphone $25- The ability to answer your phone without taking out your phone is always handy
*Decent Speakers $25- The 2x fullrange speakers plus the bass radiators put out decent sound
*Internal Rechargeable Battery $25: Built in power and the small size make this easily portable to take anywhere.
The upgradeable firmware is an added plus. I immediately upgraded to 2.2 upon opening the box so I cannot comment on previous versions. I like that you can turn off the annoying sounds when you do anything with the Jambox. The feature of automatically turning off the LED light on the power switch after about 10 seconds is good for battery conservation and ambiance. With my preference of no sound effects, the option to download different voices is moot.
The feature they highly regard is the LiveAudio which they quote as "immersive, three-dimensional listening experience brings incredible depth, detail, and unprecedented spatial realism" is currently a gimmick. I am no audio expert, but to my ears it seems they just flatten the sound curve (the normal mode has the midrange forward the highs and lows; but more on this later) and lower the overall volume. They were not kidding with "immersive and 3D" because you and your friends have to gather around and crowd the Jambox to hear anything. If they can keep the flatter tonal curve and increase the volume, then I think we have a winner.
SOUND QUALITY: In normal sound mode, the volume is great and feels like the midrange is a little too forward. This means that the singer's voice(s) is clear, with the highs and lows less so. If you play all your songs from your music app then you can EQ to your liking. I like FLAT to balance everything. Unfortunately, I listen to Pandora and Songza more, and the EQ does not apply. This forwarded midrange helps with the speakerphone function. Caller voice is clear and understandable.

1 MONTH REVIEW: The Jawbone Jambox is starting to grow on me. The compact size is perfect to toss in a backpack for work, travel, or school. The sound is reasonable and the battery life is excellent (meets the 10hr claim).
*If you plan to exclusively listen at home; moving it from livingroom to bedroom to patio, with the occasional travel, I suggest the BIG Jambox. That thing is not so portable but the sound is AMAZING. The downside is that along with the increased sound and size is the increase in price: $300 (some current sales bring it down to $250)
*If you already have a nice sound system at home but want to have good sound while traveling, then I highly recommend this product. The reasons I do not give this a full 5/5 stars is the useless LiveAudio feature they boast. I have written on my initial review how the sounds to me. All it takes is a firmware update to fix: c'mon Jawbone! I still feel this thing should be $100 so it can compete strongly with other portable bluetooth speakers like the Jabra SOLEMATE Bluetooth Portable Speaker - Retail Packaging - Black and the new Logitech UE 984-000298 Mobile Boombox Bluetooth Speaker and Speakerphone (Black Grill/Black) . The case included is cool, but annoying: it's okay to slide the speaker in, but a pain to remove. If they changed it so that opening is length-wise, then I can just "drop in" the speaker instead of pushing it out like a push-pop.

INITIAL REVIEW: I'm on the fence on the Jawbone Jambox. I bought it when it went on sale for Black Friday/Cyber Monday 2012 for $130. At the asking price of $200, it's just too absurd. At the $140-180 range, it's still too steep. Even at the price I paid, it's still a little expensive. This speaker should be in the $100 range, and here's why:
*Bluetooth technology $25- The range of the Jambox bluetooth is pretty good. Definitely more than my Logitech Bluetooth adapter in my Entertainment Room.
*Speakerphone $25- The ability to answer your phone without taking out your phone is always handy
*Decent Speakers $25- The 2x fullrange speakers plus the bass radiators put out decent sound
*Internal Rechargeable Battery $25: Built in power and the small size make this easily portable to take anywhere.

1) SOUND - lets dive into the most important part -
For Android users:
I want to note first that if you are using an android phone like me, there is a bug on android where if you have "Voice Enabled" in the "Navigation" app, the audio ouput volume sometimes gets stuck on a lower volume. To describe exactly what I'm talking about: If you have "Navigation" running with "Voice Enabled" and you are listening to music simultaneously, whenever "Navigation" informs you to turn, the music volume will be reduced and sometimes will be stuck on this particular volume level until another turn is announced where it will just self correct. Ever since my old days with an HTC Evo 4G on Sprint (Android 2.3) all the way to my most current Samsung Galaxy S4 (Android 4.2) this issue has not been addressed or fixed. So if you have purchased this speaker, try restarting your phone if you fear the volume is not loud enough.
Back to Sound:
I bought the JBL Flip first hoping that it was worth the $100 I paid for it on Amazon and I must say I was quite impressed with how well the speaker handled unusually loud volumes coming from my Samsung Galaxy S4 over a bluetooth connetion. The S4 does warn you when you reach above safe hearing levels, but even disregarding the warning the speaker never really showed any sign of rattling or distortion even at full blast. However, the Jawbone Jambox does not get quite as loud as the JBL Flip and even if you do reach a higher volume level the music is often not very pleasant to hear. There is a lot of distortion, rattling, and scratching. I tested both speakers using the AUX output (headphone, stereo, or 3.5mm cable) as well as Bluetooth. Please continue reading however as there may be issues with audio quality over bluetooth on the JBL Flip.
The winner for sound is: JBL Flip.
2) CONNECTIVITY - in this part I will talk about the different types of connections available on both the Jambox as well as the Flip.
Bluetooth: Of course the biggest selling point of both products is their bluetooth connectivity options. Unfortunately, the JBL Flip I purchased had very poor antenna reception (even on a serial number above 0189100 which reportedly fixed the bluetooth antenna issues with this particular device). If I stood beyond 6 or 7 ft from the speaker I would notice that the speaker would experience intermittent disconnects or choppy/distorted audio. Ever since I purchased the Jawbone Jambox however, I forgot this could even be an issue with some of these bluetooth speakers. The sound may not get as loud on the Flip, however I was not ever worried about the Jambox disconnecting or distorting the sound when I walk away from it.

Charging: The reason I make this a separate category is because I really hate the idea of proprietary chargers. The JBL Flip only supports it's own power adapter's connection and there is no immediate substitute for this. If your JBL Flip runs out of battery and you do not have the charger handy, too bad. The Jawbone Jambox has a standard microUSB connector which is the exact same type of connection as most Android phones. I do not recommend you charge your Jambox with your Android charger, however you may at least connect the device to your laptop or other usb input and provide some source of power if needed.

Simultaneous Multipoint: The only reason I returned my JBL Flip is it's inability to connect to multiple devices simultaneously and serious issues with the bluetooth antenna. Where the JBL Flip falls short, I really feel the Jawbone Jambox picks up. The Jawbone Jambox will allow connections from up to 2 devices simultaneously, however do not be tricked by the marketing hype. The Jawbone Jambox will pair with 2 devices simultaneously however only 1 device will be able to output "Media Audio" on the device with no option to switch between the two other than disabling "Media Audio" connectivity on the device outputting "Media Audio" at that time. This was extremely upsetting and disappointing to me. Why even bother advertising multiple connections through bluetooth when only one device may output "Media Audio" until it disconnects from the device? I'm not sure if Jawbone was deliberately trying to mislead consumers but I certainly felt misled.
Battery Status: The JBL Flip power button will repeatedly glow red off and on until the battery dies with no real option of knowing the exact battery level. The Jawbone Jambox however does provide a downloadable app known as Jawbone Companion which will provide you a rough idea of the battery level. This battery level indication is not in a percentage but instead as a "about full", "about two-thirds full" etc. I dont imagine it would have been too difficult to at least provide an ETA before the battery dies but I'm not complaining as the JBL Flip does not really provide any information at all and this is certainly better than that.
The winner for Features: Jawbone Jambox
Again, these are just my first thoughts on the two and I am much happier with my Jawbone Jambox than with my JBL Flip even though I know that the JBL Flip sounded better. I just do not see the JBL Flip as being a practical portable speaker when it lacks key features such as a tolerable bluetooth antenna range and battery status.

So the other day I stopped by an Apple store and browsed around. I was looking for a nice portable speaker that would be great to use for my upcoming cruise. Along the way, I came across this little black rectangular cube that caught my eye. After playing around and testing the jambox at the store, I instantly felt I had to own it.
Yes, the sound does not surpass the quality of a far larger boombox at the same price point. And yes, one can argue that there are comparable speakers at lower prices. But honestly, when it comes to design, ease of use, and portability, I really think nothing else matches the jambox in the current market.
I, for one, was very satisfied with the sound quality given the size of the jambox. I tested various genres of music and for the most part it all came out very clear and relatively balanced, though the bass on this little sucker was extremely powerful for its size. It definitely packs a nice punch and has more than enough power to fill up a small to medium room. However, as others pointed out here, I would not use this speaker to light up a party or a loud room full of people. And at times, the sound would come out distorted if you jack up the jambox volume and the master volume of your device to the max. That is why I recommend you use this for personal use, or perhaps for a small group of friends in a mid-sized room. Personally, I bought this so I can use it on trips or even as a small speaker in the bathroom.
One note - I did try using the LiveAudio update on the jambox, and I didn't find it to be that awesome, nor did it improve the quality of sound in my opinion. After testing it, I have since opted to keep it off, in favor of the default settings. Also note, the bass is so powerful, you might want to keep it away from places like the edges of tables or cabinets. It might literally fall off from all the vibrations.
The setup was very easy. After updating the software (which took about 5 min), I was good to go. It took me seconds to pair up my iPhone 4 via bluetooth and the same for my iPad 2. I have had zero problems with either in terms of connectivity. I tested music, movies, and music videos and the speakers performed perfectly. I did not have any issues with dropped connections. I did notice that after syncing up the jambox with my iPad 2 that at times the sound disappeared, but it can be easily rectified by simply toggling the jambox/internal speakers option via your device. On the iPad 2, there is a menu that pops up whenever you play a song or video that allows you to manually decide the output. But otherwise, this device has (so far) performed perfectly.
I also like the long battery life of this device. After a 2 hour or so charge, I had enough juice for about 10 hours on the speakers. I also like how you can plug your device directly to the speakers in the event you don't want to use the wireless feature. It was also great that they included the stereo cable, along with the necessary USB cables with the charger. All in all this device was designed to be a stylish, plug & play device that was easy on the eyes. It was definitely not easy on the wallet, but if you have some extra cash to spend and you want an attractive, small, speaker on the go, this is the one to get.
EDIT: So I gave the bluetooth/speakerphone option a try. It is GREAT. The sound was VERY clear and I experienced no problems with the connection. As a listener, the sound coming into the speaker was clear, and the same was the case when I was the talker and others listened to my voice. For this, and the playback features that I reviewed above ... the jambox is definitely a great get, if you don't mind the somewhat hefty price tag.
Also note I tested various calls, and also was on a single call for 30 minutes straight. Absolutely no disruptions or problems with call quality. I also had no disconnects. We actually did a conference call in a room with several people and all our voices came through clearly.

I own both the Jambox and the Monster iClarity and thought I would compare the two products to give people trying to decide between them some feedback. Before buying this I also auditioned the Big Jambox. It defintitely sounds better and plays louder, but the increase in size is substantial so I don't really see it as fitting in a category of small bluetooth speakers to take on your travels or use in a car.
(1) Build Quality: Both of the items look like they'll hold up, but the Monster is all plastic and feels more cheaply made.
(2) "Presentation" and included items: The Jambox has an Apple like presentation with a real fancy box, two usb cables of different lengths, an AC charger, a unique flat 3.5" audio cable and a nicer carrying case. The Monster comes with a cloth drawstring case and a USB cable for charging from a USB output. That being said, none of these accessories in any way make a darn bit of difference to the sound quality and probably account for about 30% of the increased cost of the Jambox. To be honest in real life you'll probably only use the unit and a USB cable most of the time (for charging) so the rest of it is just window dressing.
(3) Ergonomics: Each of these has their own problems. Monster has placed the three control swithes on a side of the unit making it hard to grab it without accidently changing a setting. It also has a blue LEDs up front that can't be dimmed and can be incredibly distracting when trying to use it in a dark area. It is however, substantially smaller and lighter than the Jambox and unlike the Jambox will not vibrate so badly as to move itself (I've already had the Jambox fall off a shelf since it vibrates even on fairly low volume settings and moves). The Jambox looks better and the controls on the top of the unit are much easier to use, but the "voice" and beeps that are used to tell battery level, volume settings etc. are just gimmicks that quickly become incredibly annoying since they can't be turned off and are quite loud.
(4) Performance:
(a) Battery life: they both seem to last about 10 hours at medium volume.
(b) Hands free use with phone: They both seem to work about the same, but I would give the Jambox a slight edge, it's mike seems to work better with skype.
(c) There is no doubt that the Jambox has more bass, but it's nowhere near as much as you might think. It's obvious from listening to these two units that they have very different design philosophies. The Monster tries to be as wide range as possible and has little bass eq. and does not dull the treble - so it will sound like it has almost no bass and maybe too top heavy, since the treble is not cut off. The Jambox has heavily boosted mid bass and cuts off the highs, using pyschoacoustics to make you think that it has a much fuller, richer sound. Which of these you prefer is totally a personal thing, if you want better highs and more accurate midrange go with Monster. If you want a bit more bass and the illusion of fuller sound, go with the Jambox.

What made me give the Jambox a 4 rating is it's potential to be much more if (and when) the ability to download enhancements is taken seriously. For the moment the only worthwhile sound enhancement makes the sound coming from the Jambox appear to be much more three dimensional. Using this setting lowers the maximum volume by quite a bit and is hit or miss depending on the original recording, but sometimes it's quite good. If Jawbone would quit wasting time on gimmicks like different voices and other stuff that has little if any value the ability to upgrade the firmware could be used for incredibly useful things, such as allowing the user to cut back on the bass eq and turn up the treble or whatever they wanted to make this speaker sound the way they personally want it to sound. Heck, the built in Mike could be used to send them what your speaker sounds like in your particular placement and give you options to make it sound clearer, bassier, whatever. It is because of this potential expandibility that the Jambox could be a real winner.
(1) Build Quality: Both of the items look like they'll hold up, but the Monster is all plastic and feels more cheaply made.
(2) "Presentation" and included items: The Jambox has an Apple like presentation with a real fancy box, two usb cables of different lengths, an AC charger, a unique flat 3.5" audio cable and a nicer carrying case. The Monster comes with a cloth drawstring case and a USB cable for charging from a USB output. That being said, none of these accessories in any way make a darn bit of difference to the sound quality and probably account for about 30% of the increased cost of the Jambox. To be honest in real life you'll probably only use the unit and a USB cable most of the time (for charging) so the rest of it is just window dressing.
(3) Ergonomics: Each of these has their own problems. Monster has placed the three control swithes on a side of the unit making it hard to grab it without accidently changing a setting. It also has a blue LEDs up front that can't be dimmed and can be incredibly distracting when trying to use it in a dark area. It is however, substantially smaller and lighter than the Jambox and unlike the Jambox will not vibrate so badly as to move itself (I've already had the Jambox fall off a shelf since it vibrates even on fairly low volume settings and moves). The Jambox looks better and the controls on the top of the unit are much easier to use, but the "voice" and beeps that are used to tell battery level, volume settings etc. are just gimmicks that quickly become incredibly annoying since they can't be turned off and are quite loud.
(4) Performance:
(a) Battery life: they both seem to last about 10 hours at medium volume.
(b) Hands free use with phone: They both seem to work about the same, but I would give the Jambox a slight edge, it's mike seems to work better with skype.
(c) There is no doubt that the Jambox has more bass, but it's nowhere near as much as you might think. It's obvious from listening to these two units that they have very different design philosophies. The Monster tries to be as wide range as possible and has little bass eq. and does not dull the treble - so it will sound like it has almost no bass and maybe too top heavy, since the treble is not cut off. The Jambox has heavily boosted mid bass and cuts off the highs, using pyschoacoustics to make you think that it has a much fuller, richer sound. Which of these you prefer is totally a personal thing, if you want better highs and more accurate midrange go with Monster. If you want a bit more bass and the illusion of fuller sound, go with the Jambox.

Over the weekend, I purchased a Jawbone JAMBOX (Black Diamond), on sale-- down from $199 to $149. It is an interesting piece of technology and design which allows you to play music wirelessly using a bluetooth connection from your phone, tablet, or computer. It's supposed to go for 10+ hours on a single charge (I believe it, though haven't actually tested), and really does sound very good for it's diminutive size (6 x 1.6 x 2.8 inches ; 12 ounces).
It's a funny little guy. First off, it's small enough to fit in a jacket pocket, and has a solid quality feel to it. It's currently on sale here at Amazon for $149, but even at that price many may find it's a tad expensive for what you get. You can certainly find cheaper speakers which sound as good, but they aren't as small nor as portable. And, the audio, while fine for my tastes, may disappoint those who really like to rock out, as it's just not really all that loud. Still, there's something intangible about the combo stereo speaker/speakerphone product, which I very much like.
Perhaps it's the Olivetti type rubberized controls and the simplicity of operation. Like many Apple products, it "just works." You can configure it with custom voices and other special features by going to Jawbone's website and downloading new MY TALK software for it. I don't know of any other speakers with this sort of functionality. And the LiveAudio patch creates amazing stereo separation from a six inch long speaker! You really have to hear it to believe. The speakerphone is okay, but not omni-directional.
All in all, I'm very satisfied, even though I had to replace my first one because the battery couldn't take a charge. I recommend the JAMBOX as a personal speaker for those who do not listen to music at really loud volumes.
And for those who already own one, or are intending to buy one, there are a few important things to note, which aren't explained very well in the documentation.
Here are a few observations which I believe may help others who are new owners of JAMBOX.
a. You can't check battery status UNLESS the Jambox is already paired AND unplugged from a charging source. This of course makes no sense, and is not documented anywhere, but two separate calls to support have confirmed this. I wish the interface designers paid as much attention to the software part of this as the engineers did. There are numerous issues with software user interface feedback. I can't for the life of me understand why you can't check the battery status without being paired.
b. Be sure and upgrade to the 2.1 software. There are numerous voices which can be added PLUS the all important LiveAudio binaural algorithms are installed which allow for much better Right Left music separation (note, turn OFF LiveAudio when listening to movies and the voices are much crisper). Also, there is a new setting called "Sound Clarity" which, when turned on, reduces the clipping and distortion of the speaker when turned up fully. This can reduce the volume for those extra loud passages. IMO, it's worthwhile.
c. When using with Bluetooth, you should set your originating device to max volume, then use the + - buttons on the Jambox to mitigate volume.
d. When using an audio cable, do not set the originating device to max volume, but rather 1/2 to 3/4 volume, so as to not overdrive the devices amplification, causing clipping and distortion on the Jambox.
e. Don't forget, you need to press the + and - buttons WHILE THE UNIT IS ON to toggle LiveAudio on and off. Because of the signal attenuating algorithms, LiveAudio plays less loud than the regular mode, so when you toggle it off, be sure and press the + button to make it play louder in the regular mode.
f. If you are using the Jambox with an audio cable and NOT bluetooth, then the LiveAudio is forced OFF and cannot be turned on. IOW, LiveAudio can only be toggled on/off and used when paired with a bluetooth device.
g. I've been told by two service reps that instructions on 'resetting' Jambox on their forum and FAQ are incorrect. The FAQ says,
1. While the JAMBOX is ON, hold down the TALK button (circular button)
2. Plug in the JAMBOX to the charger. The charger must be plugged in to power.
3. Once the JAMBOX is plugged in to the charger, you can release the TALK button.
These are WRONG! Number 1 above should be (2 & 3 are the same)
1. While the JAMBOX is OFF, hold down the TALK button (circular button)
Unfortunately, and again due to poor interface design, there is NO SIGNAL when this has been accomplished correctly.

I bought this on a whim while on sale, after already owning a
Bose® SoundLink® Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II - Nylon
. I love the Bose and it has great sound, and while it's portable it's not "daily portable" like this device. I recently bought the Jawbone Up and loved it, and wanted to try another Jawbone product.
About the device aesthetics & initial use:
This is the little speaker that can. It's beautiful, designed with a resilient hard rubber bottom and top, assembled like a German product and works great. Charging it fully took a bit longer than I'd hoped, but I've used it for several hours a day for several days and still haven't had to charge it yet.
Unlike the Bose, this device is a little smarter to verbally announce when it's in pairing mode, verbally responds with battery level etc. and generally provides more quick useful feedback than devices that only use icons to indicate status.
Usage wise, it is a Bluetooth speaker and paired easily with my iPhone. The range is as good as the Bose so I'm able to traverse my loft apartment without having any disconnections. Once connected I never hear any static or disruptions to the sound.
About the sound:
Clean and loud enough to be heard the next room away. Bass is less pronounced than the larger Bose that I have, but you can really "feel" the bass in this unit if you're touching it. Placing it on a surface that will reverberate the bass vibrations really increases the bass level. It's a trade off for me on big bass with the Bose, or a little less bass but great portability with this one.
I paired both the Bose and this device to my phone and sampled many songs, switching back and forth seamlessly between the devices to hear the difference. You might think the Bose would win every time since it's larger, but that's not the case. There were several tracks (usually more acoustic ones) where I felt this unit better delivered the rich detail of the track while the Bose sounded like the mids and highs had been turned down.
A HUGE important part about this device: There is a software update available for it, so you should plug it in with the Jawbone updater app as soon as you get it. It adds a live audio function that for me is a deal maker. Before the update I was not that pleased with the device. If you want less of a stereo sound and simply volume, you can turn the live audio off but so far I've always preferred the live audio sound to the louder volume.
So why this device instead of the Big Jambox or the Bose? Real portability-- you could easily toss this in a jacket pocket or a backpack and not feel like you're over-burdening overall weight for music. The device is 1/4 the size of the Bose, yet performs far more than 1/4 the sound, usefulness and convenience.
I haven't used the device for a Bluetooth phone speaker yet, but probably will. If/when that happens I will update this review.
If there were one thing I'd like to improve it might be some of the bass reproduction. I'm already amazed at what it can do in such a tiny size though. I don't think I'd want to increase device size for more bass. It fits right in it's category of size/sound production/value. While playing around with it I ended up sitting it on my chest and listening to it. You can really feel the bass that way and it's almost like the personal listening space of headphones without having to wear headphones. A very relaxing immersive experience.
Also, feel free to ask any questions in the comments and I'll do the best to get back to you very quickly!
Finally-- the shape design shown in the picture of the front grill is not nearly as pronounced in person as it is in the photo. Don't let that mislead you into thinking it has a huge indention in the front. It doesn't.

I got this product because a good friend had recommended it to me (we usually have the same taste in electronics among other things). Both he and I travel for our jobs and having a nice and compact speaker system is a nice to have when you are in a hotel room for a month or so. Actually, he demonstrated his Jambox for me while we were in Japan, and I thought the sound quality was pretty good for its size (this, of course, happened about 5 minutes later as there were some Bluetooth pairing complications due to the unit's low battery). In the end, while in Japan, I ordered the Red Dot Jambox and timed it to be shipped to my California address the same time I'd be home for a brief visit so I could go back to Japan with my new toy.
My first impression when I opened the box was that it was a very nice looking product and came with a nice variety of accessories: compact case for the Jambox, short and long USB charging cables, USB wall charger and AUX cable. I immediately plugged the unit into the wall to charge, powered it on, and connected it to my iPhone 4 via the AUX cable. As expected, the sound was flawless since it was directly connected to my phone. The sound was impressive and the bass really kicked in also. After the AUX check, I let the unit charge for about 30 minutes and then proceeded to test the Bluetooth portion. It took me about 5 minutes to pair it up with my iPhone and stream some music from iHeartRadio (the sliding power switch and its LED lighting scheme takes some time to get familiar with). Success!
At this point, I thought I'd be taking this thing back to Japan so I can enjoy my music from this speaker instead of my iPhone/iPad/laptop; however, this was not the case... I went to sleep with the music streaming from my phone to the Jambox. The next day I woke up and the music was not playing anymore. My phone still indicated that the music was playing, but there was no sound from the Jambox, only static. Perplexed, I turned off the Bluetooth from my phone and the music started playing on my phone again. I tried turning on Bluetooth, re-pairing, forgetting, re-pairing, and basically every combination to try to get the Jambox to play again but with no success. I then reverted back to the AUX cable, and as I expected, music would play from the Jambox again. A quick search on Google confirms that many people have experienced the same type of problem with many occurring after updating their units' software/firmware. I read that some people were able to get the Bluetooth mode on the Jambox working again by inserting the AUX cable about 3/4 of the way into the unit (leaving the other end unconnected), so I gave it a try. Voila, it worked! However, when you pull out the AUX cable, the music stops and the static returns. Slightly puzzled, I did some more reading on Google and saw people were getting replacement units directly from Jawbone when they contacted Customer Service, so I quickly followed suit...
My first call to Customer Service had me perform a "Soft Reset" of the Jambox after unpairing the unit with my phone. After the unit was powered on again, I paired it up with my phone (which I was currently using to talk to the rep). Once the unit paired, it automatically went from my phone's receiver/speaker to that of the Jambox (I was actually a bit surprised because I never really intended to use the Jambox for a speaker phone, but it was nice to know that this feature was still working). The rep then instructed me to try to play music, so I opened up iHeartRadio again and started playing a station. To my amazement, the music started streaming to the Jambox even while I was still on the call with Customer Service, so I thought the problem had been resolved and tried to get the music to stream normally again. But when I ended the call, the music also stopped. To my understanding, there is a hierarchy on what the Jambox will stream audio: I think it goes AUX, phone calls, music (so basically AUX before Bluetooth and phone calls before music). This was also confirmed by the Customer Service rep, saying the music should not be playing while we were on our call. After more troubleshooting with no luck, I started reading up on a user who had the same issue as mine but was able to get his working by sticking a small screwdriver into his AUX port on the Jambox and removing it (basically similar to inserting the AUX cable and removing it). Getting frustrated, I gave it a try and actually got it to stream on one attempt. But with the success rate being very, very low, I decided to call Customer Support one more time for more troubleshooting advice and having the last resort intention of asking for a replacement unit (which eventually I would not do). Same thing as the first call, "Soft Reset" followed by a "Hard Reset", still no luck. The rep also suggested to update the SW, which I found absurd since the Jambox was working fine the night before. This was clearly a hardware problem. In my experience it was similar to a problem which I suffered once with my iPhone 3G; when listening to music through headphones, I unplugged the headphone jack from the phone, but the phone still thought the headphones were plugged in. There's a switch in the jack which senses if something is plugged in or not. Solution: insert headphones and remove again. I figure this was the same type of problem that was happening with the Jambox.
After the whole ordeal with Customer Service and trying to get this unit back to life, I decided to just give up and return it. Like it says in the title, the idea of this product is nice, and it packs a nice punch with its sound and capabilities; however, the quality of this $179.99 product is severely lacking. 1 day and the unit is malfunctioning. In others' experiences, upgrade software and then the units malfunction. I'd gladly fork over the $179.99 for something like this since I can conveniently put it in my suitcase when I travel, but I won't be doing so until Jawbone comes out with a new and improved model which is free of all the quality issues and is clearly labeled as such (i.e. Rev 3 or what have you).

To my amazement, the music started streaming to the Jambox even while I was still on the call with Customer Service, so I thought the problem had been resolved and tried to get the music to stream normally again. But when I ended the call, the music also stopped. To my understanding, there is a hierarchy on what the Jambox will stream audio: I think it goes AUX, phone calls, music (so basically AUX before Bluetooth and phone calls before music). This was also confirmed by the Customer Service rep, saying the music should not be playing while we were on our call. After more troubleshooting with no luck, I started reading up on a user who had the same issue as mine but was able to get his working by sticking a small screwdriver into his AUX port on the Jambox and removing it (basically similar to inserting the AUX cable and removing it). Getting frustrated, I gave it a try and actually got it to stream on one attempt. But with the success rate being very, very low, I decided to call Customer Support one more time for more troubleshooting advice and having the last resort intention of asking for a replacement unit (which eventually I would not do). Same thing as the first call, "Soft Reset" followed by a "Hard Reset", still no luck. The rep also suggested to update the SW, which I found absurd since the Jambox was working fine the night before. This was clearly a hardware problem. In my experience it was similar to a problem which I suffered once with my iPhone 3G; when listening to music through headphones, I unplugged the headphone jack from the phone, but the phone still thought the headphones were plugged in. There's a switch in the jack which senses if something is plugged in or not. Solution: insert headphones and remove again. I figure this was the same type of problem that was happening with the Jambox.
After the whole ordeal with Customer Service and trying to get this unit back to life, I decided to just give up and return it. Like it says in the title, the idea of this product is nice, and it packs a nice punch with its sound and capabilities; however, the quality of this $179.99 product is severely lacking. 1 day and the unit is malfunctioning. In others' experiences, upgrade software and then the units malfunction. I'd gladly fork over the $179.99 for something like this since I can conveniently put it in my suitcase when I travel, but I won't be doing so until Jawbone comes out with a new and improved model which is free of all the quality issues and is clearly labeled as such (i.e. Rev 3 or what have you).
